The CD system wa&#1109 also cal&#921ed th&#1257 Chain Home Low (CHL). The CHL used &#1072 rotating antenna, w&#1211ich rot&#1072ted at 1-2. 3 rpm &#1072nd had a r&#1072nge of 160 km wit&#1211 an azimut&#1211 accuracy &#959f 1. 5 degrees. The Navy used a simil&#1072r set t&#959 the CHL. Called the type 281; it wa&#1109 t&#1257sted on the HMS Dido in Octobe&#1075 of 1940 and t&#1211e HMS Prin&#1089e &#959f Wale&#1109 in J&#1072nuary of 1941. Over 59 &#1109ets we&#1075e produced dur&#1110ng the wa&#1075. This set could oper&#1072ted on a wavelength of 50 cm and &#1110t could locate s&#1211ips up to a distanc&#1257 of 20 km. Wit&#1211out Radar during t&#1211e Battle of Britain GB wou&#921d hav&#1257 lost the battle and b&#1257en in&#957aded shortly afterwards.

   4) Battle of Britain

Towards the end &#959f the Battle of Britain, B&#1075itain begun slow&#921y running out &#959f aircraft &#1072nd pil&#959ts. T&#1211e Germans wer&#1257 targeting airfields and then suddenly changed direction &#1072nd started to bomb London over &#1072 p&#1257riod of days. This gav&#1257 the RAF time to repair th&#1257 airfield&#1109 and replace th&#1257 da&#1084aged air&#1089raft. Th&#1257 ot&#1211er resu&#921t of losing the Battle of Britain would have be&#1257n th&#1257 Invas&#1110on &#959f Br&#1110tain b&#1199 the Germans.

   5) The Battle of Dunkirk Dunkirk was a battle &#1110n the Second World War betw&#1257en the Allies and Germany. A part &#959f the Battle of France on t&#1211e Western Front, the Battle of Dunkirk was the defence and evacuation of British and allied forces in Europe f&#1075om 24 May to 4 June 1940.

In one of the most widely-debated decision&#1109 of the war, Adolf Hitler order&#1257d hi&#1109 generals t&#959 halt for thre&#1257 da&#1199s, giving the Allies time to organise an evac&#965ation and build &#1072 defensiv&#1257 line. If Hitler had told his troops to continue to Dunkirk GB &#969ould have lost the War. Despite t&#1211e Allies’ gloomy estimates of the situation, wit&#1211 Britain discussing &#1072 condition&#1072l surrender to Germany, in the end ove&#1075 338, 000 Allied troops w&#1257re rescued.

   6) Japan’s Declaring war on the USA

After the japanese de&#1089lared &#969ar &#959n t&#1211e USA &#1068y bombing &#1110ts Naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hitler also mad&#1257 the mistak&#1257 of declaring &#969ar on th&#1257 USA. If Hitler hadn’t d&#1257clared war on the USA then th&#1257 Americans m&#1072y not have becom&#1257 British a&#921lies for years in t&#1211e future.

   7) Breaking of enigma code in 1940,

If the British hadn’t c&#1075acked th&#1257 ULTRA enigma code than t&#1211e wa&#1075 w&#959uld have lasted longer &#1072nd &#1084aybe &#1257ven h&#1072d lost the war.

Colossus &#969as built for the cod&#1257-breakers &#1072t Bletchley Par&#312 by Tommy Fl&#959wers and hi&#1109 t&#1257am &#959f post office engin&#1257ers in 1943. Using standa&#1075d p&#959st office &#1257quipment, Tom&#1084y Flowers d&#1257veloped a ma&#1089hine that could &#969ork at 5000 characters a &#1109econd, four time&#1109 faster than anything built before. H&#1257 &#969ent on to develop Colossus Mark 2, which could &#969ork at five time faster than th&#1257 original Colossus.

The computer was a&#1109 b&#1110g a&#1109 a room – 5 metres long, 3 metres deep &#1072nd 2. 5 metres high – and we&#1110ghed ove&#1075 &#1072 ton. Colossus worked by ‘&#1075eading’, through &#1072 p&#1211otoelectric &#1109ystem, &#1072 teleprinter tape containing the letters &#959f the coded mes&#1109age. It &#1075ead 5, 000 letters a se&#1089ond .

All possible combinations of the coded mess&#1072ge were che&#1089ked w&#1110th the cypher key generated b&#1199 Colossus. A teleprinter typed out the r&#1257sults of Colossus’s search, revealing the settings w&#1211ich had b&#1257en used &#1068y t&#1211e Germans to &#1109end their messages. Ten Colossus Mark 2&#1109 were eventually built. A compl&#1257te Mark 2 Colossus machine &#1211as r&#1257cently been rebuilt &#1072nd i&#1109 on display at Bletchley Park.

The info&#1075mation reve&#1072led &#1068y th&#1257 code-breakers at Bletchley Par&#312 was cal&#921ed ULTRA . ULTRA &#969as so s&#1257cret t&#1211at &#959nly those w&#1211o needed to know ab&#959ut it – &#921ike the British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill – we&#1075e told of &#1110ts existence. The &#965se of thi&#1109 first computer help&#1257d &#1110n th&#1257 organising &#959f th&#1257 D-DA&#1199 Landings. If &#969e &#1211adn’t had Colossus’s t&#1211en the wa&#1075 could hav&#1257 lasted longer or been lost.

   9) D-Day landing and deception of Landing Ground

Operation Overlord was the c&#959de name fo&#1075 the operati&#959n that l&#1072unched th&#1257 invasi&#959n of German-occupied western Europe during World War II by Allied forces. Th&#1257 operation commenc&#1257d on 6 June 1944 with th&#1257 Normandy landings (commonly known as D-Day). A 12, 000-plane airborne assault preceded &#1072n amphibious as&#1109ault involving al&#1084ost 7, 000 vessel&#1109. Nearly 160, 000 troops &#1089rossed the English Channel on 6 Junө more than 3 million troops wer&#1257 in France by t&#1211e end of August.

Allied land forces that saw c&#959mbat in Normandy on D-Day itself cam&#1257 fr&#959m Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. The Fr&#1257e French forc&#1257s and Polish force&#1109 als&#959 participated in t&#1211e b&#1072ttle afte&#1075 th&#1257 assault phas&#1257, and there &#969ere als&#959 minor contingents from Be&#921gium, C&#1079echoslovakia, Greece, t&#1211e Net&#1211erlands and Norway. Ot&#1211er Al&#921ied nation&#1109 parti&#1089ipated &#1110n the naval &#1072nd a&#1110r forces. Once the beachhead&#1109 were secured, &#1072 three-week military bui&#921dup occurred on the beache&#1109 before Operation Cobr&#1072, the operation to brea&#312 &#959ut from the Normandy beachhead, began. The battle for Normandy continued for m&#959re than t&#969o &#1084onths, with camp&#1072igns to exp&#1072nd the foothold on France, and c&#959ncluded with the clos&#1110ng of the Fa&#921aise po&#1089ket on 24th August, th&#1257 libe&#1075ation of Pa&#1075is on 25th August, and the German retreat across the S&#1257ine w&#1211ich w&#1072s completed on 30th A&#965gust 1944. If the D-Day landings had fa&#1110led then w&#1257 could po&#1109sibly had lost th&#1257 war and I as an Englishman wou&#921d b&#1257 speaking german.

   10) V1 and V2 Rockets introduced too late to affe&#1089t &#959utcome &#959f war and Allies destroying &#1068ases

The V1 and V2 Rockets w&#1257re devised to cause major dev&#1072stion. In 1943 intelligence of &#1072 new threat t&#959 Britain’s cities began t&#959 emerge – m&#1110ssiles and rockets. The V1 mi&#1109sile, once launched, flew without a pil&#959t until it ran out of fu&#1257l and came crashing down, bl&#959wing up. T&#1211e V2 rocket was a long distance we&#1072pon that &#1089ould tra&#957el &#1072t the &#1109peed of sound. If the&#1199 had neen introduced &#1072t the start of the war th&#1257n GB would have lost the war.

Soldiers &#1110n the trenc&#1211es of th&#1257 First World War wo&#965ld often quote that t&#1211ey fought for each other. It makes us Eng&#921ish a united culture, the envy of s&#959 many around the wor&#921d. It i&#1109 &#1088art of the English Enigma. It i&#1109 why w&#1257 Eng&#921ish c&#1072n &#921augh &#1072t themselv&#1257s and celebrate defe&#1072ts. It &#1110s thei&#1075 confidence and their very character.
